In its 23rd year, the Lawrence St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee provided another wonderful celebration for the people of Lawrence with one of its largest parades and it also continues to provide funding for local charities that benefit young people in our community.

A few months ago the Committee invited local charities to apply to the Lawrence St. Patrick’s Day Parade for funding. This year the Committee chose to provide support to five very admirable groups, Women's Transitional Care Services (now Willow Domestic Violence Center), Douglas County CASA, Family Promise, Van Go, and the Lawrence Humane Society. Five charities is the greatest challenge that the committee has ever taken.

The Committee is an all volunteer organization and does not start with a known budget from which we provide money to charitable causes. Rather, we invite those chosen to become partners with our committee and to share in our activities. Together as a team we reach out into the community informing everyone we can about those charities. Our intention is to make the community more aware of these organizations and that that awareness will continue yielding support beyond the monies we provide.

All of these organizations deserve special thanks for what they do for our community and for the enriching experience they have provided our committee. We are proud of these organizations and appreciate their hard work and their contributions to our efforts and events.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade fundraising events this year included our Annual Charity Benefit Auction, the 5K Shamrock Shuffle, T-shirt sales, a Motorcycle Run, Trivia Night, Casino Night, and Bowling, Dart, Pool, and Texas Hold ’em Tournaments.

I thank everyone in the community that has joined with us to make our success a reality. It is only trough the generous contributions and the participation by individuals and businesses in our community that make these good things happen. Now we are here today to put that money raised to commendable use.

Our fundraising activities conclude this year with a record amount of money being presented by the committee with checks to the Willow Domestic Violence Center, Douglas County CASA, Family Promise, Van Go, and the Lawrence Humane Society in the amount of $10,500 each. We ask everyone to continue to keep these organizations in mind for the future because; they deserve your ongoing support!

With a total of $52,500, the most ever provided in a single year, to our five charities it brings the total amount, to date, given back to the community by the St. Patrick’s Day Parade to $579,621.00. As we look forward to another great year next year I would like to introduce you to next year’s Co-Chairs of the 2011Parade Committee, Debi Drummet and Mike Lohmann. Sincerely, Roger Browning, Chair The 2010 St. Patrick’s Day Parade of Lawrence, KS
